Earth and Sky Master Class

Earth and Sky is an Eight Week class divided into 2 Four Week modules with a One Week break in between the two modules.

Module 1: Sketch, Draw, Paint, Surface Design, and Planning your new Body/Series of work.

Break Week

Module 2: Surface Design, Stitch, Embellish ~ During Week Eight I will teach you several different methods to hang, and display, your new series, AND how to present your work for Solo Exhibitions, gain collectors, and more.

NOTE: Because of the intensity of this class I am limiting the number of spaces available to 30 students!!!

Pre-requisites: prior  experience using an indigo vat and earth pigments OR Basic Blues and Colors of the Earth online classes.

NOTE: If you're unable to manage an indigo vat, you can use purchased indigo dyed fabric for your piece. You will want to purchase a range of blue values.

In this class we will take one idea (theme) and build upon it to create a rock solid body of work (series) that you will be able to continue to build upon after the class ends!

Required Surface Design Supplies:

  • Sketchbook
  • Basic watercolor set
  • Pencil for sketching
  • Earth Pigments (Yellow Ocher, Mayan Blue, French or English Red Ocher, Burnt Sienna, Burnt Umber)
  • Natural Dye Extracts (Cochineal, Cutch, Weld, Indigo)
  • Charcoal (either homemade or commercially purchased)
  • Soy Milk
  • White charcoal 
  • White Gesso or inexpensive white craft paint

Required Surface Design Equipment

  • Printer for image tranfers
  • Blank silk screen and squeegee for screen printing

  • pH Papers or pH monitor 
  • Stainless Steel Stock Pot or Enamel Stock Pot 5 quarts or larger
  • 4 two gallon plastic buckets
  • 1-2 five gallon plastic buckets or a tub suitable for rinsing large pieces of fabric
  • Tongs
  • Stainless steel spoon (the kind used for cooking)
  • Measuring spoons
  • Measuring cups
  • ~*~ OPTIONAL electronic scale for measuring out exact amounts of dyes, etc
 

Required Safety Equipment

  • high quality dust mask and/or a respirator
  • protective clothing such as an apron or smock
  • nitrile or latex gloves
Required Stitching and Embellishing Supplies

  • 2-4 yards PFD (Prepared for Dyeing) cotton and/or silk fabric
  • Thread
  • Aquabond or other water soluble fabric
  • Misty fuse interfacing
  • Beads, baubles, and/or found objects that catch your fancy

Required Stitching and Embellishment Equipment

  • Sewing machine that you are comfortable using
  • Iron
  • Ironing board or a surface for pressing and melting fabrics, etc.
  • Teflon pressing sheet
  • Craft heat gun
  • Scissors
  • Small ruler

  • This online class costs $179
  • Class will be held on a private website that only registered students are able to access.
  • There is a support group for this class on Facebook!  
  • All information for the class is all posted at once and ready for access and work at your own pace.
  • Basic computer skills are needed (be able to login, access a blog, etc), you are responsible for knowing  how to use your personal device to access the internet.
  • Class can be accessed from most digital devices with recent updates.
  • THIS CLASS INCLUDES VIDEO LESSONS THAT ARE DOWNLOADABLE! If your service is “iffy” then I highly recommend downloading the videos onto your device, doing so will eliminate buffering issues.
  • I have provided LOTS of step by step visuals in the form of photos, and when needed diagrams.
  • A high speed connection if definitely recommended, again if you do not have high speed internet then please download the videos to your device.
